Best Bar Prep Courses: What to Know Before Law School Starts
The bar exam is still years away from where you are right now, but understanding what that stage actually looks like can make the whole path from admission to licensure feel a little less uncertain. Here’s how Themis + UWorld, BARBRI, Kaplan, JD Advising, and Helix prep courses compare on the factors that will matter most once you get there.
How We Evaluated These Courses
Each provider was scored against the seven factors above, along with pricing, course access length, and overall structure, to arrive at the “best for” line in the table. Every figure came from each provider’s own current course pages, pricing pages, and published feature listings rather than third-party estimates. Course pricing, access windows, and feature availability shift across the providers. They may look different by the time you’re actually choosing a course, so it’s worth checking each provider directly when that day comes.
JD-Next® is part of UWorld Legal, the same network behind Aspen Publishing’s law school study aids, Themis Law School Essentials® (LSE), Themis MPRE® Review Course, and Themis Bar Review®. Each one supports a different stage of the same path:
- JD-Next helps you get into law school.
- Aspen’s study aids and Themis LSE support the coursework once you’re there.
- Themis MPRE covers the ethics exam most states require alongside the bar.
- Themis Bar Review is one of the options you’ll eventually weigh for the bar exam itself.
Themis + UWorld is evaluated in this comparison using the same criteria applied to every other provider based on publicly available information, including where it falls short, to choose the best bar prep.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
No. JD-Next is about getting into law school, and the bar exam is years away from that. It’s fine to know roughly what’s ahead, but there’s no need to research or choose a bar prep course at this stage.
JD-Next, Aspen’s law school study aids, Themis LSE, Themis MPRE Review Course, and Themis Bar Review are all part of UWorld Legal. Each one supports a different stage: JD-Next helps you get into law school, the others support you once you’re there and eventually prepare you for the bar.
JD-Next builds legal reading, reasoning, and writing skills that carry forward into law school and, eventually, into how you approach dense material during bar prep. It’s not a substitute for bar prep itself, but the habits it builds don’t disappear once you’re admitted.
Most students start a full course about 10 to 12 weeks before the exam, once law school itself is finished. That’s a decision for later; nothing about it needs to be figured out now.
Based on the comparison above, Themis + UWorld tends to come out ahead on licensed question depth, real attorney feedback, and a published pass rate you can check. BARBRI, Kaplan, JD Advising, and Helix each fit better for different needs, covered in the reviews above.
The Legacy Uniform Bar Examination (UBE®) tests the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE®), Multistate Essay Examination (MEE®), and Multistate Performance Test (MPT®) separately. The NextGen UBE combines multiple-choice questions, question sets, and performance tasks into one integrated format. NextGen began rolling out to states in July 2026, and by July 2028, it will completely replace the Legacy UBE.
Most first-time takers need a full course, since the bar exam grades written analysis as well as multiple-choice questions, and a standalone question bank doesn’t cover essay or performance-test practice.
It’s possible, but it may require greater self-direction and discipline. Free and low-cost resources often cover doctrine well but typically lack graded essay feedback, performance analytics, and a structured study plan, all of which help catch gaps before exam day rather than after.
